Cascading Style Sheets
In my fourth IS lesson, I learnt how to use simple CSS to format a website. We focused on external style sheets, instead of internal style sheets and inline style sheets. With one external style sheet, the appearance of multiple other HTML files that are linked to it can be changed. Additional codes need to be added to the html document: the DOCTYPE and CSS external style sheet link, which links to the CSS file located in the same folder as the HTML file. The DOCTYPE means "document type declaration" which declares which version of HTML the document adheres to. HTML 4 comes in three flavors, each with a different DOCTYPE. They are namely: HTML 4 Strict, HTML 4 Transitional and HTML 4 Frameset. Our Assignment 4 was the CSS Challenge. Using the file for the HTML Challenge, our class work together in pairs to format the website by adding appropriate styling, comments and reflections. After working with my partner for Assignment 3, we completed the assignment together more smoothly and faster without any discrepancies.

HyperText Markup Language
In my third IS lesson, I understood how to use basic HTML coding to create a functional website. There is a distinct difference between the "txt" file (notepad) and the "html" file. I learnt about the HTML code structure or "skeleton", so to say. Before writing the content or the "skin" of the file, some common HTML tags need to be used. I also learnt to add images using the four attributes: width, height, border and alt (show tooltip); comments which are not displayed in the browser; and hyperlinks to webpages. The desired page may be an absolute URL (external page) or relative URL (internal page). Our Assignment3 was the HTML Challenge. Provided with a notepad file, our class work together in pairs to create a website by adding appropriate HTML tags, comments and reflections. I learnt to work collaboratively as a team with my partner to complete the assignment.
Of the two tutorials in both websites provided in Handout 3, I prefer w3schools website. It provides a HTML editor where I can edit and view the results of more than 100 HTML examples in the tutorial. I also like the quiz tests and references in the website. On the other hand, w3 website provides a brief but clear description of HTML. Another alternative website is http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/.

IS Forum
In my second IS lesson, I learnt about forums. Forums allow visitors to the website to virtually sit next to each other like in an online conference, expressing and seeing differing views and opinions on a diverse range of subjects. Forums make the website appear inviting and interactive, although they open the website up to hackers, spammers and predators. The information that the visitors offer can be beneficial to all who participate in the forums. Good forums can weave a strong community around them.In this lesson, we immerse ourselves in discussing the social impact of new media technologies, ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property and the differences between a blog and a website, by penning down our opinions and responses in the IS forum. Through the forum, we read the responses of our fellow classmates and have a deeper understanding on the topics about Web New Media ourselves.
My topic for the forum is "Decide blog or website?". While I personally prefer a blog, a few of my classmates prefer a website and Jeryl Seow agrees that blogs are "just meant to be online journals and nothing more". The majority of my classmates prefer blogs. Both blogs and websites have their pros and cons. As I posted that one of the cons of blogs is that "it is difficult to customise and change the design of blogs". However, Zane Chee disagrees, proving that "before you even click it, your template is fairly easy to alter." I hereby acknowledge and apologise for my mistake.
I commented on a forum topic "Intellectual Property - Is copy right?". I think that copying may not always be wrong. Inventions that are patented should be used to save lives, not make profits. Although the majority of the class expressed that copying is definitely wrong, my classmate, Zane Chee said that "copying , in some cases, is right. In fact, there are some people who want others to copy their work e.g http://www.freeimages.co.uk/". I think that is quite an interesting and intriguing post.

What is "The Internet & World-Wide Web"?
In my first IS lesson, I had a little understanding about the history of the Internet and some web terminology. Web New Media have a profound impact in the way we work, read, shop, watch and write as opposed to traditional media. In the Internet, there are the Web 1.0 generation and the Web 2.0 generation like Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Ning and also this blog. Web 2.0 is a "democratic, personal, do-it-yourself medium of communication". Web 2.0 not only stores information like Web 1.0, it also provides a social platform for people to gather and interact.
The Internet- this public, independent network- has been growing substantially over the years. I also learnt a few interesting Internet jargon like the domain name, a text version of the Internet protocol (IP) address (The IP address for Hwa Chong website is 202.79.186.21) ; the World Wide Web (WWW); Uniform Resource Locator (URL); File Transfer Protocol (FTP), an Internet standard that allows Internet users to upload and download files with other computers on the Internet, and proper 'Netiquette', respecting yourself and other Internet users. In conclusion, the Internet is a convenient and effective means of communications.
